"Intelligent" Speed Camera's

Postby JAM » Wed Nov 04, 2009 7:32 pm

The Highways Agency plans to roll out new 'intelligent' speed cameras with a host of new tricks to put the brakes on speeding drivers - including the ability to cover multiple lanes simultaneously.

The new cameras also don't flash, meaning many drivers won't realise they've been 'done' until the fateful letter appears on the doormat. They'll also be able to differentiate between lorries and cars, enabling them to enforce lower speed limits for trucks.

We don't know how much of our cash the Agency intends to spend on this 'intelligent' camera scheme, or even why they think it is good value for the taxpayer. Either way, it would have been nice if they'd asked us motorists, as we're the ones paying all their bills!

What we can tell you, is that the Highways Agency has also revealed plans to spend a whopping £58 million on new dedicated cameras that will measure your average speed on motorways. In a 'tender notice', the Agency says the primary objective will be to enforce motorways with variable and temporary speed limits, but once the units are approved by the Home Office, who knows where they'll pop up next...

It all smacks of a major Highways Agency 'job justification scheme' to us. Roll on the revolution!
